Affonso Hebert : ecletismo republicano no Rio Grande do Sul

Abstract

Este estudo investiga a arquitetura produzida pelo poder público do Rio Grande do Sul durante os primeiros anos da República em Porto Alegre, através das obras do arquiteto Affonso Hebert. Com formação na Europa, Hebert ingressou na Secretaria de Obras Públicas como desenhista, ainda durante o Império, e teve a oportunidade de chefiar a Diretoria de Obras Públicas do Estado sob o comando de diferentes governantes. Neste período, Hebert deu às suas obras uma identidade própria, inspirada na arquitetura eclética européia e principalmente na Paris da Belle Époque. O ponto de partida deste trabalho foi uma revisão bibliográfica cuidadosa, combinada com investigação em arquivos e relatórios sobre as obras produzidas por Hebert durante sua estada na Secretaria de Obras Públicas. Em seguida, foram buscadas, junto aos descendentes do arquiteto, informações sobre sua formação e sobre as possíveis referências utilizadas por ele em seus projetos. Posteriormente, foram feitas análises das obras por ele realizadas, buscando identificar a sua inserção no panorama local e em contextos mais amplos da arquitetura do início da era republicana. O panorama analítico de sua produção visa constituir uma contribuição à tarefa de identificar e interpretar a produção arquitetônica gaúcha nos primórdios do século XX.

This dissertation investigates the work done by the architect Affonso Hebert in the capital city of Porto Alegre. Hebert was head of the office of public works of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil, during the first decades of the republican regime. Educated in Europe, Hebert began his public carreer as a draftsman during the Imperial period. Later, he directed the office of public works under the command of many presidents of the state. During his term, Hebert designed in a singular form, inspired in European eclecticism, and particularly in the architecture of Paris in the Belle Époque. This dissertation has started with a thorough bibliographic review, combined with archival investigation related to the works made by Hebert in his stay at the office of public works. Further information was obtained with the descendants of the architect. This stage was followed by a formal investigation of the projects and buildings designed by Hebert, which also tried to frame his work in the local and extra-local contexts at that time. The outline of the architect's work intends to make a meaningful contribution to the understanding of the architecture of Rio Grande do Sul in the beginning of the 20th century.
