Adverb usage in academic writing : the role of portuguese language contact on english 'eventually' and 'actually’

Abstract

Language contact between speakers of different languages has long been recognized as a catalyst for language influence. This study investigates the influence on usage of the adverbs "eventually" and "actually" when individuals are exposed to a second language through continuous study and professional engagement. Specifically, it explores the influence of Portuguese, the mother tongue, on English usage, the additional language. To analyze this phenomenon, a corpus of academic texts, including undergraduate theses and dissertations written in English by students from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) enrolled in Language and Literature courses, was compiled. This was compared to academic articles written by linguistics experts from the Plos One platform. By examining the usage patterns of "eventually" and "actually", the study aims to identify similarities and differences, shedding light on how Portuguese potentially influences their use in English. The results revealed significant differences in the usage of these adverbs between the two groups, suggesting a noticeable influence of Portuguese on the English usage by UFRGS students. These findings have implications for teaching English as an additional language and for understanding the linguistic interaction between Portuguese and English.

O contato linguístico entre falantes de diferentes idiomas tem sido há muito reconhecido como um catalisador para a influência linguística. Este estudo investiga a influência no uso dos advérbios "eventually" e "actually" quando indivíduos são expostos a um segundo idioma por meio de estudo contínuo e envolvimento profissional. Especificamente, explora a influência do português, a língua materna, no uso do inglês, o idioma adicional. Para analisar esse fenômeno, um corpus de textos acadêmicos, incluindo trabalhos de conclusão de graduação e dissertações escritas em inglês por estudantes da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) matriculados em cursos de Língua e Literatura, foi compilado. Isso foi comparado a artigos acadêmicos escritos por especialistas em linguística da plataforma Plos One. Ao examinar os padrões de uso de "eventually" e "actually", o estudo visa identificar semelhanças e diferenças, lançando luz sobre como o português potencialmente influencia seu uso em inglês. Os resultados revelaram diferenças significativas no uso desses advérbios entre os dois grupos, sugerindo uma influência perceptível do português no uso do inglês pelos estudantes da UFRGS. Essas descobertas têm implicações para o ensino do inglês como idioma adicional e para a compreensão da interação linguística entre o português e o inglês.
