Medicina veterinária de abrigo de animais

Abstract

A Medicina de Abrigos é um assunto recente e emergente no Brasil, no entanto em outros países, por exemplo, os Estados Unidos da América, desde 1866 existem associações, cujo objetivo principal é o bem-estar dos animais abandonados, tirando-os das ruas e realocando-os em abrigos. A Medicina de Abrigos aborda todos os problemas relacionados à saúde dos animais de abrigos, à estrutura do local e à equipe envolvida com os animais. A Medicina de pequenos animais individual é uma parte da medicina de abrigos, mas somente saber tratar o indivíduo de forma isolada não é suficiente dentro de um abrigo ou de qualquer local onde existam muitos animais em contato direto. Existe a necessidade de saber tratar um grupo de animais, onde o controle e prevenção de doenças são diferentes comparados a um indivíduo isolado. As espécies, canina e felina, transformaram-se num verdadeiro rebanho de animais e medicina veterinária de abrigos é a área especializada para tratar disso. Os médicos veterinários tem desempenhado um papel relativamente limitado nos abrigos de animais, tendo um foco em castrações, na saúde individual dos animais e na eutanásia humanitária. Entretanto, o papel do médico veterinário nos abrigos vai além da assistência médica, mas também é de sua responsabilidade o gerenciamento do abrigo em relação à estrutura do local e ao treinamento da equipe envolvida com os animais. Talvez essa limitação de função seja uma consequência da falta de informação sobre a medicina de abrigos na formação acadêmica. A maior parte das universidades não tem em seu currículo a disciplina de medicina de abrigos nem de forma eletiva, assim como pouca ou nenhuma informação é dada sobre essa área. Esta é extremamente necessária, devido ao crescente número de animais de companhia vivendo agrupados, e também por ser uma oportunidade de carreira para o profissional da medicina veterinária.

The Shelter Medicine is a recent and an emerging issue in Brazil; however in other countries, for example, United States, there are associations since 1886, whose main objective is the welfare of the homeless animals, removing them off the streets and relocating them in shelters. The Shelter Medicine addresses all problems related to the health of animals in shelters, the structure of the place and the staff involved with the animals. The individual small animal medicine is a part of shelter medicine, but only knows how to treat the individual in an isolated way is not enough in a shelter or any place where there are many animals in direct contact. There is the need to know how to treat a group of animals, which control and disease prevention are different compared to a single individual. The species, canine and feline, became a real herd animal and a shelter medicine is a specialize field to address it. Veterinarians have played a relatively limited role in animal shelters, whose focus is the spray/neuter surgeries, the health of individual animals and humane euthanasia. However, the role of the veterinarians in shelters goes beyond medical care, but it is also your responsibility the management of the shelter in respect to the structure of the place and the training of staff involved with the animals. Perhaps this limitation of function is a consequence of the lack of information about medicine shelters in the academic education. Most universities do not have in their curriculum a shelter medicine subject or provides it as an elective subject, as well as no or little information is provided about this field. This is extremely necessary, due to the growing number of pets living grouped, and because it is a career opportunity for professional veterinary medicine.
