O alienista : pelas lentes de Gilberto Freyre e Oliveira Vianna

Abstract

Em O Alienista Machado de Assis remete ironicamente às reformas que ocorrerem entre 1845 e a década de 1880 (o reconhecimento da Bill Aberdeen, a lei de 1871 que libertava recém-nascidos da escravidão - Lei do Ventre Livre) e a Confederação Abolicionista (1883). Entretanto, para leitor pouco afinado com as particularidades da sociedade brasileira do século 19 e com o progresso social no Segundo Império, não é fácil compreender as sutilezas das guinadas da ironia machadiana, nem o que representaria Simão Bacamarte no contexto social da época. No presente estudo, objetiva-se rastrear a camuflada crítica social e política que se esconde atrás do enredo aparentemente simplório do referido romance.

In O Alienista, Machado de Assis refers ironically to the reforms occurred between 1845 and the 1880 decade (the recognition of Bill Aberdeen, the 1871 law which freed children born of slave parents- Law of Free Birth, Portuguese, Lei do Ventre Livre) and the Abolitionist Confederation (1883). However, to the reader with little knowledge of the particularities of the Brazilian society from the 19th century and of the social progress in the Second Empire, it is not easy to comprehend the subtleties of the lurches of Machado’s ironies, nor what Simão Bacamarte would represent in the social context at that time. The present paper aims to trace the camouflaged social and political critics that hides behind the plot apparently simple of the mentioned novel.
