Transição hegemônica e poder naval : o declínio inglês e a ascensão dos Estados Unidos na primeira metade do Século XX

Abstract

Este trabalho dedica-se a investigar a relação entre a variável “poder naval” e as transições hegemônicas no sistema internacional, mais especificamente, no processo de decadência da hegemonia da Inglaterra e de ascensão dos Estados Unidos na primeira metade do século XX. Para tal, em primeiro lugar é realizada uma revisão teórica e bibliográfica acerca dos temas das sucessões hegemônicas – mais especificamente, da teoria dos ciclos de acumulação sistêmica, de Giovani Arrighi –, do poder naval – partindo da obra de Alfred Mahan –, e dos ciclos de supremacia naval – com o trabalho de Karen Rasler e William Thompson. Em seguida, analisa-se o declínio da indústria naval inglesa e de seu respectivo poderio militar dentro do processo de perda de hegemonia do Império Inglês, no capítulo 2, e apura-se a contribuição do setor naval na construção da hegemonia norte-americana, no capítulo 3. Por fim, retoma-se os dois processos narrados nos capítulos 2 e 3 à luz da delimitação teórica apresentada no primeiro capítulo.

This work is dedicated to investigate the relationship between the variable "sea power" and hegemonic transitions in the international system, more specifically, in the process of decay of the hegemony of England and the rise of the United States in the first half of the twentieth century. To do this, firstly, it is carried out and theoretical and literature review on the topics of hegemonic successions - more specifically, the theory of systemic cycles of accumulation, written by Giovanni Arrighi -, the naval power - from Alfred Mahan’s work - and naval supremacy cycles - from Karen Rasler and William Thompson’s wok. Then, it analyzes the decline of the British shipping industry and its respective military power within the English Empire's hegemony decay process, in Chapter 2; and it clears up the contribution of the marmite sector in the construction of US hegemony, in Chapter 3. Finally, both processes narrated in Chapters 2 and 3 are resumed in the light of the theoretical delineation presented in the first chapter.
