Entre ruas e mistérios: Geografia e Literatura nas obras urbanas de Jorge Amado

Abstract

Considerando as diversas possibilidades de reflexão geográfica através da literatura, esta tese trabalha com a literatura urbana de Jorge Amado, num conjunto de obras que reúnem diversos gêneros literários, mas que compõem uma única narrativa quanto a cidade de Salvador, capital baiana. Estatese tem como objetivo identificar e relacionar a literatura com os conceitosde espaço, território, lugar, patrimônio e paisagem. Refletindo sobre como estespodem ser entendidos e problematizados através dos doze livros analisados: O país do carnaval; Suor; Jubiabá; Mar Morto; Capitães da Areia; Bahia de Todos-os-santos; A morte e a morte de Quincas Berro Dágua; Os pastores da noite; Dona Flor e seus dois maridos; Tenda dos Milagres;O menino grapiúnae O sumiço da santa. Numa abordagem cultural trabalhamos com a literatura na perspectiva dos sistemas literários considerando autor, obra e leitor, assim, realizamos trabalhos de campo na cidade de Salvador com pesquisa etnográfica observandoos sujeitos, lugares, territórios e patrimônios na cidade, refletindo sobre suas rupturas transformações e continuidades ao longo das obras e do tempo.O trabalho com os conceitos geográficos se deu de forma conjunta, onde unidos pelo viés cultural,cada elemento analisado relacionou-se aos demais conceitos. Descobrimos territórios bem delimitados, lugares que se transformaram em patrimônios, num conjunto que resulta na dinamicidade do espaço e da paisagem analisada, em constante transformação. A partir dos grupos desujeitos representados pelospersonagens,pudemos perceber os territórios existentes na literatura estudada, e a partir daí conhecer os lugares que fazem parte destes territórios, lugares estes, significativos aos personagens e a história da cidade. Notamos então a transformação de muitos destes lugares em patrimônios materiais ou ainda com relação aos patrimônios imateriais existentes como legado da cultura afrobrasileira. Tambémcompreendemos cada elemento formador da paisagem composta por cada lugar trabalhado,pontuando todas as transformaçõesocorridas ao longo da narrativa como lugares que deixaram de existir, ou ainda manifestações que foram sendo tombadas como patrimônio até o fim desta escrita. E por fim demonstramos a geograficidade presente na literatura onde os conceitos trabalhados se sobrepõe mostrando a complexidade que envolve o espaço geográfico.

Considering the many possibilities of geographic reflection through literature, this doctoral dissertation deals with the urban literature of Jorge Amado, in a collection of works gathering several bibliographical genres, but which is part of a single narrative regarding the city of Salvador, capital of Bahia. This doctoral dissertation aims to identify and relate literature with the concepts of space, territory, place, heritage and landscape. Reflecting about how these can we understood and problematize through the twelve books analyzed: O país do carnaval (The Country of Carnival); Suor(Sweat); Jubiabá (Jubiaba) ; Mar Morto (Sea of Death); Capitães da Areia (Captains of the Sands) ; Bahia de Todos-os-santos (Bahia de Todos-os-santos); A morte e a morte de Quincas Berro Dágua (The Double Death of Quincas Water-Bray); Os pastores da noite (Shepherds of the Might) ; Dona Flor e seus dois maridos (Dona Florand Her Two Husbands) ; Tenda dos Milagres (Tents of Miracles); O menino grapiúna (The Grapiuna Boy) andO sumiço da santa (The War of the Saints). Througha cultural approach we worked with literature under the perspective of systems literature considering the author, work, and reader, thus, we conducted a fieldwork in the city of Salvador with ethnographic research observing the individuals, place, territories and heritage of the city, reflecting about its ruptures, transformations and continuations through the works and time. The study with the geographic concepts was given in an integrated form, where united through cultural bias, each element analyzed was related to the other concepts. We discovered well delimited territories, placed transformed into heritage, in a set which results in the dynamism of space and of the landscape analyzed, in constant transformation. From the groups of individuals represented by characters, we were able to perceive the existing territories in the literature studied, and from it then to get to know the places which are part of these territories, such places, significant to the characters and history of the city. We realized, then, the transformation of many of these places intomaterial heritage or even with relation to the existing immaterial heritage as the Afro-Brazilian culture legacy. In addition, we understood each forming element of the landscape composed by each place worked, highlighting all the transformations occurredthroughout the narrative as places which no longer existed, or even manifestations which have been considered as heritage until the end of this writing. And, lastly, we demonstrated the “Geographicity” present in the literature where the concepts worked override showing the complexity which involves the geographic space.
