Racializando o branco ou desvelando a branquitude : a política de imigração e colonização no Rio Grande do Sul (1875-1889)

Abstract

Ao longo do século XIX, alguns setores da elite política e intelectual brasileira se deparavam com uma conjuntura de ânsia, medo e crise, o mundo tal qual conheciam estava ruindo, as pressões pela abolição da escravidão se faziam cada vez mais intensas e os levantes escravos se faziam cada vez mais possíveis de tomarem o poder. Nesse turbilhão, a política de imigração e colonização é elaborada enquanto um projeto para o futuro da nação que manteria o domínio e poder da elite e ajudaria a conformar uma nova ordem social. O presente trabalho buscou iluminar a política de imigração e colonização da Província de São Pedro do Rio Grande do Sul a partir da categoria branquitude, a fim de desvelar as concepções sobre raça, no geral, e raça branca, mais precisamente, que cercaram a estruturação e encaminhamentos da política. A noção de branquitude foi mobilizada pela elite política a fim de reservar um lugar de diferenciação aos imigrantes que serviam aos seus interesses e legitimar a exclusão de algumas populações não quistas. Portanto, a branquitude foi usada pela elite como um instrumento de controle e dominação.

Throughout the nineteen century, some of the parts of the intellectual and political Brazilian elite came across a scenario of eagerness, fear and crisis, the world as they knew was collapsing, the strain for the abolition of slavery was more and more intense and slave uprising where more and more likely to take power. In this whirlwind, the policy of immigration and colonization is organized as a project to the future of the nation, which would maintain the domain and power of the elite and would help to form a new social order. This work seeks to light the categories of policy of immigration and colonization in the Province of São Pedro do Rio Grande do Sul using the category of whiteness, aiming to reveal the conception of race, in general, and more specific the white race, which surrounded and structured the channeling of said policy. The notion of whiteness was mobilized by the political elite in order to reserve a place of difference to the immigrants that served their interests and legitimize the exclusion of some of the unwanted populations. Therefore, whiteness was used by the elite as an instrument of control and domination.
