The power of the west compels you! : a memória cultural orientalista no filme O Exorcista (1973)

Abstract

A presente pesquisa procura compreender a construção de uma memória cultural orientalista na narrativa cinematográfica de horror a partir do filme O Exorcista de 1973, dirigido por William Friedkin e baseado no romance homônimo de William Peter Blatty. Os principais pontos do trabalho se sustentam na análise do discurso orientalista, repensado por Edward Said, e como ele se incorporou em um recordar do sujeito oriental por parte do Ocidente de forma a transformar um estereótipo que se inicia como exótico e diferente à uma ameaça e representação do Mal. E no contexto histórico e sociocultural dos Estados Unidos da América nas décadas de 1960 e 1970, respectivamente.

This research seeks to understand the construction of an orientalist cultural memory in the horror cinematographic narrative from the 1973 movie The Exorcist, directed by William Friedkin and based on the homonymous novel by William Peter Blatty. The main points of the work are based on the analysis of the orientalist discourse, rethought by Edward Said, and how it was incorporated in a recall of the oriental subject by the West in order to transform a stereotype that starts as exotic and different to a threat and representation of Evil. And in the historical and sociocultural context of the United States of America in the 1960s and 1970s, respectively.
