O tempo e a forma da cidade : o curso do discurso

Abstract

Essa dissertação tem como objetivo examinar as relações entre a história urbana e suas representações gráficas, em particular sua representação pela computação gráfica. A problemática colocada por esse objetivo -- que inclui a questão da representação como forma de dar sentido às coisas; as técnicas de representação por imagens, as quais se diferenciam historicamente; e a produção histórica do espaço urbano através das formas de representação gráfica -- liga-se diretamente ao problema que serviu de base para a pesquisa e a escrita dessa dissertação: como a computação representa o passado da cidade e qual o estatuto dessa representação para a memória de Porto Alegre? As ferramentas teóricas desse trabalho, ligadas à computação gráfica, às questões sobre a representação e a memória, foram operacionalizadas no exame das diferentes formas de representação gráfica do espaço urbano de Porto Alegre. O desenho em computação gráfica, que encerra essa dissertação, deteve-se na representação do espaço que envolve a Praça XV e o Mercado Público da cidade, em dois diferentes momentos históricos: o atual e o do início do século. E mostra as cidades do presente e do passado produzidas pela computação gráfica.

This dissertation has as a goal to examine the relationship between urban history and its graphic representations, especially computer graphics. The problematic set by this goal -- which includes the question of representation as a manner of giving sense to things; the techniques of representation by images, which differentiate historically; and the historical production of the urban space throughout representation graphic forms -- connected straight with the problem that has given the basis for the research and the writing of these dissertation: how the computer graphics represents the past of the city and what is the statute of this representation to the memory of the city of Porto Alegre? The theoretical tool for this work, connected to the computer graphics, the questions about representation and memory were processed in the investigation of the different form of graphic representation of the urban space of Porto Alegre. The drawing in computer graphics, that ends this dissertation, detains on the representation of the space that evolves the Praça XV and the Mercado Público of the city, in two different historic moments: the actual and one from the beginning of the century. And it shows the cities of the present and of the past produced by computer graphics.
