Abstract

Até a invenção do cartão-postal ilustrado, na segunda metade do século XIX, nunca haviam circulado tantas imagens ao redor do mundo. A coleção familiar dos Doering é um exemplo de como esse tipo de correspondência conquistou o gosto popular e contribuiu para a disseminação de valores burgueses e do imaginário de modernidade que partia da Europa. A pesquisa realizada tem o objetivo de analisar índices de modernidade nessa coleção familiar de 159 cartões-postais, datados entre 1900 e 1940. A estratégia de aproximação de imagens de Aby Warburg é tomada como um exercício para estruturar e pensar essas imagens, dispostas inicialmente por localidades e tipos e, finalmente, por índices. Como resultado, evidenciam-se cruzamentos entre os postais e outros produtos e questões da modernidade, tais como: a cidade, a máquina e a industrialização, os meios de transporte modernos, o colonialismo.

Until the invention of the illustrated postcard in the second half of the 19th century, never before had so many images circulated around the world. The Doering family collection is an example of how this type of correspondence gained popular appeal and contributed to the dissemination of bourgeois values and the imaginary of modernity that originated from Europe. The aim of this research is to analyze the indexes of modernity in this family collection of 159 postcards, dated between 1900 and 1940. Aby Warburg's strategy of approach is taken as an exercise to structure and analyze these images, initially arranged by locations and types, and ultimately by indexes. As a result, intersections between the postcards and other products and issues of modernity, such as the city, machines and industrialization, modern modes of transportation, and colonialism, are highlighted.
