O materialismo histórico como fundamento da teoria do estado de Friedrich Engels

Abstract

Neste trabalho, investigo a teoria de Engels segundo a qual o Estado é, em todas as épocas e lugares, via de regra, o Estado da classe economicamente dominante. Ou seja, o Estado existe em função de auxiliar a classe dominante na exploração das classes exploradas. Investigaremos como é possível que Engels afirme tal teoria. Nossa principal questão será: Quais as justificativas e os fundamentos da teoria de que o Estado existe em função dos interesses de uma classe economicamente dominante? Observamos, no decorrer do trabalho, que o fundamento principal da teoria do Estado de Engels é o materialismo histórico. E, na intenção de compreender melhor a teoria materialista da história, passamos a analisar a obra A Teoria da História de Karl Marx: Uma Defesa, de G. A. Cohen. Cohen, pertencendo à tradição do marxismo analítico, procura defender o materialismo histórico de Marx e Engels por meio de um argumento da escolha racional. Observaremos, contudo, certas inconsistências entre a teoria do Estado de Engels e a defesa que Cohen faz ao materialismo histórico. Argumentamos, por fim, que embora a teoria do Estado de Engels dependa necessariamente da teoria materialista da história, desenvolvida por Marx e ele, a defesa que Cohen confere ao materialismo histórico não dá conta de explicar como as classes economicamente dominantes se tornam e se mantêm politicamente dominantes. In this work, I investigate Engels’ theory of State according to which the State is, in all times and places, the State of the economically dominant class. That is, the State exists in order to help the dominant class in the exploitation of the exploited classes. We will investigate how it is possible for Engels to affirm such a theory. Our main question will be: What are the justifications and foundations of the theory that the State exists to help the interests of an economically dominant class? We observed, in the course of the work, that the main foundation of Engels' theory of the State is historical materialism. And, in order to understand better the materialist theory of history, we start to analyze the work The Theory of History by Karl Marx: A Defense, by G. A. Cohen. Cohen, being a member of the analytical Marxist tradition, aims to defend the historical materialism of Marx and Engels through a rational choice argument. We will observe, however, some inconsistencies between Engels' theory of the State and Cohen's defense of historical materialism. Finally, we argue that although Engels' theory of the State necessarily depends on the materialist theory of history developed by Marx and him, Cohen's defense of historical materialism fails to explain how the economically dominant classes become and remain politically dominant.
