Participação política, redes sociais da internet e juventude em Porto Alegre-RS

Abstract

Em um contexto de crescente insatisfação social e mobilização popular, em um país caracterizado por uma cultura política apática e não participativa, as manifestações de junho de 2013 marcaram a influência dos meios de comunicação e a forma de participação política da juventude brasileira. Portanto, este trabalho tem como escopo a relação entre o uso das redes sociais e os níveis de participação política dos jovens de Porto Alegre-RS. Assim, coloca-se como problema que norteia a pesquisa “Qual a relação entre o uso das redes sociais e os níveis de participação política dos jovens de Porto Alegre-RS?” O objetivo geral é analisar a relação do uso das redes sociais nos níveis de participação política dos jovens de Porto Alegre-RS. Os objetivos específicos são: (1) identificar como os jovens usam as redes sociais e (2) analisar os níveis de participação convencional, não-convencional e online dos jovens. Para atingir estes objetivos este trabalho utiliza o protocolo quantitativo, com análise de dados coletados por survey, que foi aplicado com 602 jovens (13-24 anos) de escolas de ensino médio da rede pública e privada de Porto Alegre em 2023. A hipótese é de que os jovens que utilizam a internet e as redes sociais, principalmente para entretenimento, são mais engajados na participação política. Os resultados obtidos não corroboram essa hipótese, embora os jovens sejam os maiores utilizadores da internet e das redes sociais, os níveis de participação política analisados ainda são baixos.

In a context of increasing social dissatisfaction and popular mobilization in a country characterized by an apathetic and non-participatory political culture, the protests of June 2013 marked the influence of the media and the political participation of Brazilian youth. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the relationship between social media use and the levels of political participation among young people in Porto Alegre-RS. The research question guiding this study is: “What is the relationship between social media use and the levels of political participation among young people in Porto Alegre-RS?” The general objective is to analyze the relationship between social media use and the levels of political participation among young people in Porto Alegre-RS. The specific objectives are: (1) to identify how young people use social media and (2) to analyze the levels of conventional, unconventional, and online political participation among young people. This study utilized quantitative methods: quantitative survey analysis through descriptive and inferential statistical evaluation, as well as analysis of the open-ended questions in the survey. The survey was administered to 602 young people (ages 13-24) from public and private high schools in Porto Alegre between November and December 2023. The hypothesis is that young people who use the internet and social media, primarily for entertainment, are more engaged in political participation. The results obtained do not support this hypothesis; although young people are the highest users of the internet and social media, the analyzed levels of political participation remain low.
