A mente estendida de terceira onda a partir do pluralismo integrativo

Abstract

Nesta dissertação, eu discuto a mente estendida de terceira onda nos termos de Shaun Gallagher e defendo sua coerência com o pluralismo integrativo proposto por Sandra Mitchell. Gallagher sugere que a formação de uma terceira onda na mente estendida deve ser caracterizada pela integração do quadro teórico da mente estendida com as perspectivas enativas e pragmatistas. A partir dessas perspectivas, a investigação da extensão dos processos cognitivos e estados mentais evitaria as inconsistências teóricas, bem como as críticas que a mente estendida de primeira onda recebeu por conta da alternativa argumentativa do princípio da paridade. Por outro lado, o pluralismo integrativo, proposto por Mitchell como a melhor descrição da relação entre teorias científicas e fenômenos biológicos complexos, defende que as investigações de sistemas complexos devem realizar uma integração explicativa concreta de modelos para atender metas epistêmicas. Em concordância com John Sutton e Rick Dale, admito a cognição como fenômeno complexo e sugiro a continuação das investigações da mente estendida de terceira onda a partir do pluralismo integrativo. A adoção do pluralismo integrativo é vantajosa porque abre espaço para a compatibilidade e permite explorar a colaboração entre diferentes perspectivas teóricas para além das enativas e pragmatistas. Assim, modelos explicativos distintos podem ser integrados para a investigação da extensão dos processos cognitivos e estados mentais.

In this thesis, I discuss the third-wave extended mind in the terms of Shaun Gallagher and argue for its coherence with the integrative pluralism proposed by Sandra Mitchell. Gallagher suggests that the formation of a third wave in the extended mind should be characterized by the integration of the extended mind theoretical framework with enactive and pragmatist perspectives. From these perspectives, the investigation of the extension of cognitive processes and mental states could avoid theoretical inconsistencies as well as the criticisms directed at the first-wave extended mind due to the argumentative alternative of the parity principle. Conversely, the integrative pluralism, proposed by Mitchell as the best description of the relationship between scientific theories and complex biological phenomena, advocates that investigations of complex systems should make an explanatory, concrete integration, of models to meet epistemic goals. In agreement with John Sutton and Rick Dale, I acknowledge cognition as a complex phenomenon and suggest the continuation of the investigations of the third-wave extended mind through integrative pluralism. The adoption of integrative pluralism is advantageous because it makes room for compatibility and to explore the collaboration among different theoretical perspectives beyond enactive and pragmatist ones. Thus, distinct explanatory models can be integrated for investigating the extension of cognitive processes and mental states.
