Auctoritas & fama : reflexões sobre o reconhecimento do arquiteto na sociedade antiga a partir do texto vitruviano

Abstract

Este artigo discute o tema do reconhecimento público dos arquitetos e artistas na sociedade antiga a partir do texto vitruviano. Aborda-se o conceito de auctoritas como o mais amplo reconhecimento, alcançado a partir do escrutínio público das ações, confrontando-o com a noção de fama, ou notoriedade, alcançada por meios distintos e, por vezes, menos nobres. A partir dessas questões chave, perscruta-se o texto vitruviano em busca dos indícios de seu posicionamento a respeito do tema, recorrendo-se, sobretudo, aos prefácios e pequenas parábolas às quais o autor se vale como forma de ilustrar seus juízos. Por meio dessas diferentes passagens, discute-se, também, a noção de autoria a partir da identificação de traços dessa forma de reconhecimento, muito embora ainda estranha ao mundo antigo, e sua associação com a própria ideia de imitação e o ambiente tardo-republicano no qual Vitrúvio está inserido

This article discusses public recognition of architects and artists in ancient society based on the Vitruvian text. The concept of auctoritas is approached as the broadest notion of recognition, achieved through the public scrutiny of actions, confronting it with the notion of fama, or notoriety, achieved by different, and sometimes less noble, means. From these key questions, the Vitruvian text is scrutinized in search of evidence of his position on the subject, resorting, above all, to the prefaces and small parables which the author uses as a way of illustrating his judgments. Through these different passages, the very notion of authorship is also discussed from the identification of traces of this form of recognition, although still alien to the ancient world, and its association with the very idea of imitation and the late-republican environment in which Vitruvius is inserted
