Os passos até uma ausência : análise da construção da personagem Hannah Baker na primeira temporada de “Os 13 Porquês”

Abstract

Este trabalho tem como objetivo analisar o modo como a personagem Hannah Baker, seu transtorno mental e seu suicídio são representados narrativa e esteticamente na primeira temporada da série Os 13 porquês (2017, Netflix), utilizando como métodos a análise fílmica e a pesquisa bibliográfica. São feitos apontamentos sobre a trama, contexto e recepção da série pelo público, críticos de audiovisual e profissionais de saúde mental, dando uma visão geral sobre a série e os debates que a cercam no segundo capítulo. No terceiro, é composto um breve panorama sobre os aspectos clínicos e sociais relacionados à saúde mental e ao suicídio, e as problemáticas envolvendo a representação de tais temas pela mídia. No quarto, são abordados aspectos técnicos da construção de personagens em narrativas e as especificidades do audiovisual e do formato de série televisiva, bem como as relações que são capazes de estabelecer com seu público e o mundo real. A análise é feita no quinto capítulo, considerando explicitando o modo como se dá a construção narrativa de Hannah e de sua trama, prosseguindo para uma análise de cinco cenas de destaque na trajetória da personagem, demonstrando os elementos visuais utilizados para construir sua evolução psicológica até seu desfecho. Ao final, conclui-se que a série utiliza-se principalmente de cores, figurinos, som e enquadramentos para dar pistas sobre a contínua piora em seu estado mental, que culmina em seu suicídio, uma cena que também é marcada por esses elementos, onde a evolução dos aspectos visuais de Hannah encontra seu ápice.

This paper aims to analyze how the character Hannah Baker, her mental disorder and her suicide are represented narratively and aesthetically in the first season of the series 13 Reasons Why (2017, Netflix), using the methods of film analysis and bibliographic research. There are notes on the plot, context and reception of the series by the audience, audiovisual critics and mental health professionals, giving a general view of the show and the debates that surround it in the second chapter. In the third, a brief overview of the clinical and social aspects related to mental health and suicide, and the problematics involving the representation of such topics by the media are compiled. In the fourth chapter, technical aspects of the construction of characters in narratives and the specifics of this constructions in the audiovisual and television series are discussed, as well as the relations they are able to establish with their audience and the real world. The analysis is fulfilled in the fifth chapter, considering the way in which the narrative construction of Hannah and her plot takes place, proceeding to an analysis of five prominent scenes in the trajectory of the character, demonstrating the visual elements used to build her psychological evolution until its outcome. By the end, it is concluded that the series uses mainly the colors, costumes, sound and shots to give clues on the continuous worsening on her mental state, that culminates in her suicide, a scene that also is well-marked by these elements, in which the evolution of the visual aspects of Hannah finds its apex.
