Na melhor das hipóteses, você irá envelhecer: uma análise da representação da velhice na série Grace and Frankie

Abstract

Esta pesquisa dedica-se a representação da velhice na série Grace and Frankie por meio das personagens Grace e Frankie e como isso se correlaciona com os modelos hegemônicos midiáticos da velhice. O objetivo geral do trabalho é identificar os elementos das representações da velhice nas personagens Grace e Frankie, e os objetivos específicos, são contextualizar as representações sociais da velhice; identificar as representações dominantes, negociadas e opositivas das personagens Grace e Frankie e discutir as relações entre as representações identificadas na série e as representações sociais da velhice. No referencial teórico, foi apresentado um breve apanhado histórico da representação da velhice em diferentes épocas pelo mundo, trazendo o conceito de velhice com base em Simone Beauvoir (1990) e Debert (1999). Em uma perspectiva brasileira, trazemos uma síntese dos aspectos sociodemográficos e culturais sobre a velhice no país sob a ótica de Goldenberg (2013), Castro (2015), dados do IBGE e da ONU. Além disso, apresentamos os conceitos e estudos de representação a partir de Hall (2003; 2016), França (2004) e Wottrich (2011) sob as representações midiáticas por meio de Kellner (2001), e as ideias de codificações dominantes, opositivas e negociadas da velhice com base em Hall (2003) e Wottrich (2011). Posteriormente, relacionamos essas ideias com as séries enquanto um novo modelo de produção, consumo e distribuição segmentado do audiovisual. A terceira temporada foi escolhida para ser analisada, sendo selecionada 14 cenas em que a velhice ou ser idoso se torna central no contexto da série em que, posteriormente, foram categorizadas e analisadas de acordo com as ideias de codificações dominantes, opositivas e negociadas com base em Wottrich (2011) e Hall (2003). O resultado da análise demonstrou que a série Grace and Frankie, por meio das personagens Grace e Frankie, enquadra-se de forma majoritária nas codificações negociadas e opositivas, afastando-se dos sentidos hegemônicos e do senso comum sobre a velhice. Porém, percebemos que as representações construídas na série estão longe da perspectiva sociodemográfica e cultural dos idosos brasileiros.

This research is dedicated to the representation of old age in the series Grace and Frankie through the characters Grace and Frankie and how this correlates with the hegemonic media representation of old age. The general objective of the work is to identify the elements of the representations of old age in the characters Grace and Frankie, and the specific objectives are to contextualize the social representations of old age; to identify the dominant, negotiated and oppositional representations of the characters Grace and Frankie and to discuss the relationship between the representations identified in the series and the social representations of old age. In the theoretical framework, a brief historical overview of the representation of old age at different times around the world was presented, bringing the concept of old age based on Simone Beauvoir (1990) and Debert (1999). From a Brazilian perspective, we bring a synthesis of the sociodemographic and cultural aspects of old age in the country from the perspective of Goldenberg (2013), Castro (2015), IBGE and UN data. In addition, we present the concepts and studies of representation from Hall (2003; 2016), França (2004) and Wottrich (2011) under the media representations through Kellner (2001), and the ideas of dominant encodings, and negotiated oppositions of old age based on Hall (2003) and Wottrich (2011). Subsequently, we relate these ideas to the series as a new segmented model of production, consumption and distribution of audiovisual. The third season was chosen to be analyzed, selecting 14 scenes in which old age or being elderly becomes central in the context of the series that, later, were categorized and analyzed according to the ideas of dominant, oppositional and negotiated encodings based on in Wottrich (2011) and Hall (2003). The result of the analysis showed that the series Grace and Frankie, through the characters Grace and Frankie, fits mostly into negotiated and oppositional encodings, moving away from hegemonic meanings and common sense about old age. However, we realize that the representations built in the series are far from the sociodemographic and cultural perspective of the Brazilian elderly.
