Mesotelioma peritoneal em canino : relato de caso

Abstract

Mesothelioma is a malignant neoplasm diagnosed rarely in dogs. It originates from serous membranes that line the pleural, pericardinal and, even more rarely, peritoneal cavities. The objective of this repor tis to describe the clinical Evolution of a Border Collie dog, male, eight years old, weighing 32.4 kg, diagnosed with peritoneal mesothelioma after surgical exeresis by exploratory laparotomy and biopsy. The animal arrived for clinical care with dyspnea, discomfort and abdominal rigisity. Blood and imaging tests were requested. The blood count showed changes in anemia, lymphopenia and increased ALT and FA. On ultrasound, he presented a mass of 20.4 cm x 9 cm in the right hepatic lobe. He was referred for hospitalization and subsequente surgery to remove the mass, which revealed to be a carcinoma in the histopathological examination. However, the immunohistochemical examination detected that it was a peritoneal mesothelioma. Treatment with carboplatin and cyclophosphamide was started. The patient survived for eight months and after this period it was found possible recurrence of the neoplasm in the abdominal cavity, opting again for its surgical removal, however, he did not resist the procedure and died in the immediate postoperative period. We can conclude that mesothelioma is a challenge for the clinician, whose symptoms can be nonspecific and the definitive diagnosis is obtained only through immunohistochemical examination. Even with the unfavorable prognosis, it is importante to have the diagnosis to stablish the best treatment for the patient. There is a lack of studies and knowledge about this neoplasm in dogs, being na importante report to be shared with other clinical colleagues and surgeons in the área in order to perform na early diagnosis and improve the quality of life of affected patients, as well as include this type of neoplasm in the differenctial diagnoses.
