Snow crash : ironia e paródia no subgênero cyberpunk

Abstract

Este trabalho examina como o romance Snow Crash (1992), de Neal Stephenson, parodia o subgênero cyberpunk. Caracterizado por cenários distópicos e uma crítica incisiva ao capitalismo transnacional, o cyberpunk enfrentou um declínio a partir da década de 1990, marcado por reproduções estéticas superficiais sem o comprometimento crítico inicial do subgênero. Nesse cenário, Snow Crash se destaca por sua abordagem satírica, cômica e exagerada, oferecendo uma nova perspectiva ao subgênero. A pesquisa analisa se o romance realmente parodia o cyberpunk, e como o faz; se dessacralizando seus elementos desgastados ou problematizando os temas típicos do subgênero, e que efeito esse movimento crítico gera ao cyberpunk. A metodologia incluiu uma revisão da história do cyberpunk fundamentada por publicações de diversos autores, como Glaucio Aranha e Andrew M. Butler, uma definição teórica dos conceitos de paródia e ironia, fundamentada pelas obras de Linda Hutcheon e Affonso Romano de Sant’Anna, e uma análise detalhada de como esses elementos são aplicados em Snow Crash. Os resultados mostram que, enquanto nem todas as cenas do romance possuem um caráter paródico, há uma incorporação significativa de elementos paródicos que revitalizam o subgênero. O estudo conclui que Snow Crash é uma sátira que, ao parodiar o cyberpunk, não o critica profundamente, mas o renova, mantendo-se fiel às propostas críticas dos autores pioneiros do gênero. Além disso, sugere-se a necessidade de investigações futuras sobre a paródia de obras individuais dentro do cyberpunk e a análise do romance sob diferentes modelos teóricos.

This paper examines how Neal Stephenson’s novel Snow Crash (1992) parodies the cyberpunk subgenre. Characterized by dystopian scenarios and an incisive critique of transnational capitalism, cyberpunk faced a decline from the 1990s onwards, marked by superficial aesthetic reproductions without the initial critical commitment of the subgenre. In this scenario, Snow Crash stands out for its satirical, comical and exaggerated approach, offering a new perspective to the subgenre. This research analyzes whether the novel truly parodies cyberpunk, and how it does so; whether by desacralizing its worn-out elements or problematizing the typical themes of the subgenre, and what effect this critical move has on cyberpunk. The methodology included a review of the history of cyberpunk based on publications by several authors, such as Glaucio Aranha and Andrew M. Butler, a theoretical definition of the concepts of parody and irony, based on the works of Linda Hutcheon and Affonso Romano de Sant’Anna, and a detailed analysis of how these elements are applied in Snow Crash. The results show that, while not all scenes in the novel have a parodic character, there is a significant incorporation of parodic elements that revitalize the subgenre. The study concludes that Snow Crash is a satire that, by parodying cyberpunk, does not deeply criticize it, but rather renews it, remaining faithful to the critical proposals of the pioneering authors of the genre. Furthermore, it suggests the need for future research on the parody of individual works within cyberpunk and the analysis of the novel under different theoretical models.
